Reckoning with the history of postwar feminism and the ennui of suburban settings through meticulously crafted paintings, Leigh approaches the mise-en-scène with wry humor and morbid curiosity. Often depicting her female protagonists as rebelling against the patriarchal status quo, her figures can be seen rejecting their male counterparts through subtle means, such as eye-rolling, or excessive actions, such as clubbing men to death. At once extremely detailed and cartoonish, Leigh uses highly saturated colors and exaggerated body features to reveal the absurdity of her subject matter. Although her paintings operate in the realm of fantasy, their comical nature belies very real social ills that women have been struggling against for generations.
