Large Hand-Carved Catalan Stone Mortar, Spain, 18th century
- Description
-
Mortars are an ancient culinary tool, described as indispensable to the preparation of food and medicines in texts like the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus, dating from 1550 BC, and the writings of the Roman poet Juvenal.
With a rich textural character and satisfying weight, this time-hewn stone mortar transcends its original function. Four handles emerge from the rounded body, expressing a now-muted geometry.
Heavily worn, with truly exceptional patination and a lovely light colour.

Béton Brut
Béton Brut presents rare, design-led furniture from Europe and Japan. The collection, drawn from over a century of design, coheres around functional art & sculptural forms. Béton Brut comes from the concrete finish used in modernist architecture. It is rational yet organic, just like the collection.
